Dragoljub’s father was a tailor, a hardworking and frugal craftsman, and a socialist by conviction. His mother, Taska, was a homemaker. She gave birth to twelve children, of whom six survived.

The family was poor and large, and Stavra and Taska struggled to provide basic living conditions. Despite this, they tried to give their children a good upbringing and enable them to receive a solid education. Dragoljub Jovanović grew up as a modest “craftsman’s son and apprentice of craftsmen.” From an early age, he was “imbued with the smell of materials, the sight of people bent over their work,” who made their way through life with their own hands and labor, and who fought decisively for their existence. He enrolled in primary school in Pirot in the 1902/1903 school year. Exceptionally gifted and hardworking, he soon became one of the best students and, already from the third grade of primary school, at the age of ten, he attended workers’ gatherings at the Social House, where he recited poetry by Kosta Abrašević. He later wrote about this: “Very early I entered the school of politics, almost at the same time as primary school.”

From a very young age, he adopted the ideas of prominent socialists from Pirot—he remained faithful to their ideals of social justice, equality, and brotherhood throughout his life and the images of the difficult labor of Pirot’s peasants, workers, and craftsmen became his ideological and moral compass in his struggle for basic human rights. In the autumn of 1911, Dragoljub’s father died, and even more difficult years of poverty followed for the Jovanović family.

Dragoljub Jovanović completed primary school and lower gymnasium in Pirot, and upper gymnasium with the final examination in Belgrade. An excellent and diligent student, he stood out for his wide-ranging interests. He was particularly gifted and interested in history, literature, and philosophy. He read Russian classics, French, and Serbian writers with equal enthusiasm. Multifaceted in talent and equally hardworking, he demonstrated this already in primary school and continued to confirm it later.

He came to Belgrade in 1912, at the age of seventeen, and enrolled in gymnasium. He continued to work diligently and published texts in Radničke novine (Workers’ Newspaper) and other journals and magazines. He attended classes at both the gymnasium and the university. He most often attended lectures and drew inspiration from the ideas of Jovan Skerlić, Bogdan and Pavle Popović, and Jovan Cvijić. He had very diverse interests, but under the influence of the ideas of Dragiša Lapčević, Dimitrije Tucović, Bogdan Popović, Jovan Skerlić, and Jovan Cvijić, he increasingly focused on issues of modernization and socio-political renewal of a backward Serbia. Therefore, Dragoljub Jovanović directed his work toward sociological, political science, and legal research, in which all of his breadth, talent, and diligence were expressed.
Therefore, he believed that the peasantry should have a decisive influence and a leading role in society.

He was the founder and editor of several journals and newspapers, and one of the leading activists in the Agrarian Movement, which struggled for the social, cultural, and political advancement of rural communities and peasants. Together with like-minded colleagues, he established the Group for Social and Cultural Action (1924), which sharply criticized the autocratic regime and interethnic conflicts in the country. He also founded and edited the journals Novi pravci (1924) and Rad (1926), which promoted and popularized leftist and socialist ideas, and collaborated with numerous journals and newspapers throughout Yugoslavia. From 1925, he was a member of the Alliance of Agrarians and the leader of its left-wing faction.

In 1935, after his release from prison, he devoted himself entirely to the electoral campaign for the parliamentary elections. Running on the list of the United Democratic Opposition led by Dr. Vlatko Maček, Dragoljub Jovanović was elected as a Member of Parliament, decisively defeating the government’s candidate with 62.02% of the vote. The United Opposition finished second overall, behind the ruling Radical Party.

Jovanović advocated the idea of Yugoslav unity and supported an interethnic agreement between Serbs and Croats. He firmly opposed the ideologies and movements of fascism and Nazism. He played a key role in the formation and activities of the People’s Front of Yugoslavia, but refused cooperation with the banned Communist Party of Yugoslavia in this regard. He was particularly active in supporting the Spanish Republicans in their struggle against Franco, and in 1938 he stayed in Spain for that purpose.

After returning to his homeland, he continued his struggle against the regime and the government. He did not miss any opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Milan Stojadinović. A new pretext for Jovanović’s arrest arose on September 30, 1938, when he wrote a leaflet titled “The Greatest Betrayal since Kosovo,” in which he accused the government and the regime of the country’s difficult situation, reactionary policies, and repression of the opposition. Despite his own outstanding defense, he was sentenced to fourteen months of строг imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 dinars. He was once again imprisoned in Sremska Mitrovica, in the same cell where he had been held in 1932. He was pardoned in 1939 by a regency decree.

At the beginning of 1940, tensions between the Agrarian Left and the Alliance of Agrarians became increasingly severe, leading the Agrarian Left to withdraw from the Alliance. In March 1940, Dragoljub Jovanović and his supporters held the founding congress of the National Peasant Party, where he was elected as its general secretary.

Through his public activity, he embodied the ethos of an independent political actor grounded in the unity of thought, speech, and action. He was distinguished by personal courage, self-sacrifice, perseverance, and uncompromising dedication in the struggle for liberal-democratic principles and for the protection of human rights and freedoms.

Unfortunately, he clearly perceived that both Serbia and Yugoslavia of that time were torn apart by primitivism, partisan conflicts, and ruthless struggles for power, while civil liberties and rights were being severely violated. He rightly concluded that there could be no political emancipation or genuine liberal-democratic state without the broader social and spiritual renewal of the people. Dragoljub Jovanović devoted the best years of his life, creative work, and public engagement to this renewal of the Serbian people and Serbia.

In April 1941, when Germany invaded Yugoslavia, Dragoljub Jovanović volunteered for military service, but was not assigned a post. After the German occupation, the Communist Party called for an uprising; however, Jovanović did not respond to that call. Nevertheless, once armed resistance against the occupiers began, he chose to cooperate with the Partisans, urging members of his National Peasant Party to join the National Liberation Movement. Persecuted by the Germans and the Special Police, he managed to survive thanks to the help of numerous friends and supporters who hid him across Belgrade and Serbia.

At the beginning of 1942, Jovanović also refused an invitation from the headquaters of Draža Mihailović to join the Chetnik movement. He showed additional courage by refusing to sign the “Appeal of Serbian Intellectuals to the Serbian People” against the communists, thereby provoking further hostility from the Special Police and the Gestapo.

On September 12, 1944, he wrote a leaflet titled “Instructions to Members of the National Peasant Party Joining the Partisans,” offering guidance on how to fight for the country’s liberation and how to relate to communists. A month later, on October 15, 1944, he wrote the leaflet “Brothers Peasants,” in which he welcomed the arrival of the Soviet army as liberators of Belgrade and paid tribute to the National Liberation Army led by Josip Broz Tito. Immediately after the liberation of Belgrade, on October 22, Dragoljub Jovanović and his wife were arrested. They were taken in by Slobodan Penezić Krcun and Čile Kovačević. The reason for their detention was precisely the leaflet “Brothers Peasants,” which allegedly “emphasized the role of the National Peasant Party more than that of the Communist Party in the country’s liberation.” After exhausting interrogation, they were released and returned home around two o’clock in the morning.

After the liberation of the country in 1945, Jovanović joined the United People’s Liberation Front and became a member of parliament in the Provisional Assembly of the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia. After much debate and persuasion, he succeeded in convincing the leadership of the National Peasant Party to join the People’s Front, which occurred on February 19, 1945. Within the People’s Front, he acted as a leader of the opposition to the increasingly authoritarian and undemocratic regime. As a member of the Yugoslav Assembly from early 1945 to mid-1947, he emerged as a sharp critic of the communist regime, particularly distinguishing himself in debates on the Constitution of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, agrarian reform, cooperatives, and the public prosecution system.

In the National Assembly of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, he waged a difficult and unequal struggle. In an effort to remove this obstacle and ingratiate itself with Tito’s regime, the Council of the Faculty of Law in Belgrade decided on July 31, 1946, to expel its colleague, Professor Jovanović, from the faculty because of his political beliefs and activities.

In an attempt to eliminate Dragoljub Jovanović completely from political life, his opponents within the National Peasant Party organized a party congress on August 11, 1946, without his presence. Eleven days after his removal from the university, they expelled both Dragoljub Jovanović and his loyal associate RadomirTodorović from the party leadership and from the party itself. At the Feast of the Dormition fair in Pirot on August 28, 1946, local communist youth activists greeted their once beloved and most popular fellow citizen with stones and insults. Despite extremely harsh conditions, he produced tens of thousands of pages of manuscript. In the spring of 1953, he completed the first version of a manuscript containing approximately 400 portraits. Working tirelessly, he then began writing the multi-volume work Reflections on Morality.

Hope for Jovanović’s pardon emerged on two occasions. The first came in 1952, when the authorities abolished the peasant labor cooperatives that he had strongly opposed and for which he had largely been imprisoned. Foreign newspapers increasingly reported on his fate. Politicians such as Anthony Eden and Orest Rosenfeld, along with organizations including the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, advocated for his rights, but without success. In 1953, Tito stated in an interview with a foreign journalist that “Dragoljub Jovanović will not remain in prison much longer.” That promise, however, was not fulfilled.
in the press. On November 21, 1973, he granted an interview to journalist Dragan Kalajdžić of Zagreb. In that interview, he presented his views on politics, politicians, intellectuals, and the pivotal events of the first half of the twentieth century, of which he had been both witness and participant. One might say that, near the end of his life, Jovanović summarized his rich experience and once again demonstrated fidelity to his lifelong convictions and consistency in his political ideas and activities, without any regret.

Reflecting on his difficult fate, Dragoljub Jovanović wrote with bitterness:

“When my professor Bouglé saw that I was being arrested repeatedly in Yugoslavia, to which I had returned immediately after completing my studies, he wrote to me: ‘If Yugoslavia does not need you, come to France; we shall know how to make use of you.’ I did not go, and I do not regret it. Yet a certain bitterness remained. The monarchy imprisoned me; the republic imprisoned me. To capitalists I was a communist; to communists I was a reactionary. Thirteen of the best years of my life were spent in prisons or internment, as though I were the worst and most harmful of men.”

Until the end of his life, he lived in poverty, political isolation, and under restrictions that prevented his public engagement.

In the spring of 1977, Dragoljub Jovanović’s health deteriorated, and on May 21 his family admitted him to a hospital. He died on May 23, 1977. He was buried in the presence of his family and closest friends at the New Cemetery in Belgrade.

In this way, a unique and inimitable figure left the historical stage: a professor, people’s tribune, politician, and eternal opposition figure, a fighter for freedom without fear.

Fourth grade of the Pirot High School in 1910, second row, first from the left
Socialist students in Pirot in 1911, first from the left
Graduates of II Belgrade High School, 1914, middle row, second from the left

The First World War found Dragoljub in Pirot in 1914 and interrupted his education. He recognized the village as a unique social environment, and the peasantry—viewed as a distinct, homogeneous social class, almost mystically tied to the land—as the bearer of all that is valuable in society. Therefore, he believed that the peasantry should have a decisive influence and a leading role in society.

He was the founder and editor of several journals and newspapers, and one of the leading activists in the Agrarian Movement, which struggled for the social, cultural, and political advancement of rural communities and peasants. He also founded and edited the journals Novi pravci (1924) and Rad (1926), which promoted and popularized leftist and socialist ideas, and collaborated with numerous journals and newspapers throughout Yugoslavia.

In that interview, he presented his views on politics, politicians, intellectuals, and the pivotal events of the first half of the twentieth century, of which he had been both witness and participant.
